What Are Optical Windows?

An optical window is a transparent optical element that allows light to pass through a specific wavelength range while protecting internal components from the external environment. They are optically polished on both surfaces to achieve high transmission and minimal reflection.

Depending on the material, optical windows can cover spectral ranges from UV (200 nm) to far-infrared (10 μm). We produce optical windows in circular, rectangular, elliptical, and irregular shapes with custom surface finishes and coatings.

Custom Manufacturing Capability

Tihot-Optics can produce optical windows from 1.0 mm to 1200 mm in diameter, with thickness as low as 0.17 mm.
Shapes can be circular, rectangular, elliptical, or irregular—manufactured via CNC machining and laser cutting to meet precise dimensional requirements.

Our engineering team works directly with optical designers to optimize performance through virtual simulation and tolerance analysis. This ensures the perfect balance between cost, manufacturability, and optical efficiency.

Applications of Optical Windows

Our optical windows are widely used across diverse high-precision industries, serving as protective, transmissive, and optical interfaces in advanced systems.

FAQs about ITO/FTO Coated Glass

What materials are optical windows made from?

  • Optical windows can be made from various optical materials depending on wavelength and environmental conditions, including:

    • N-BK7 for visible and near-IR applications

    • Fused Silica (UVFS / IRFS) for UV to IR transmission

    • Sapphire for durability and scratch resistance

    • CaF₂ (Calcium Fluoride) for UV to mid-IR

    • ZnSe for CO₂ laser and infrared systems

    • MgF₂ for UV transparency

    • Silicon (Si) for IR imaging

Each material offers unique advantages in transmission range, hardness, and cost.

An optical window is a flat, transparent plate that does not alter the light path—it only allows light to pass through while protecting the system.
A lens, on the other hand, has a curved surface designed to focus or diverge light. Windows are primarily for protection, lenses are for focusing or imaging.

We provide a wide range of coatings tailored to specific wavelengths and applications:

  • AR (Anti-Reflective) Coating: Improves transmission and minimizes surface reflection.

  • Dielectric Coating: For high-power laser protection or wavelength-specific reflection.

  • Mirror Coating: For beam steering or reflective surfaces.

  • Beamsplitter / Filter Coating: For optical measurement and imaging systems.

Custom single- or double-sided coatings are available for UV, visible, or IR ranges.

  • We offer multiple precision levels:

    • Flatness: Up to PV < λ/50

    • Surface Quality: Up to 5–1 (MIL-PRF-13830B standard)

    • Parallelism: < 2 arcsec

    • Surface Roughness: RMS < 0.3 nm

These tolerances ensure minimal optical distortion and high transmission performance.

Precision-engineered optical filters for demanding optical and photonic applications. Delivering reliable wavelength control, transmission accuracy, and surface quality from UV to IR spectra.
